Why I recommend it

Why we recommend it

Hurawalhi suits couples and honeymooners who want a genuine signature experience — the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant is one of only a handful of true glass-walled undersea dining rooms in the world, and the house reef backing it up is exceptional, not just marketed as such. The resident marine biologist program and near-daily manta sightings (October-April) give divers and snorkellers a real, specific reason to choose this island. The Ocean Villa and Romantic Ocean Villa categories put that setting front and centre — direct steps from the sundeck into the ocean, with the gentle sound of the water beneath the villa rather than a view of it from a distance.

The honest fit

Hurawalhi is best taken as the grown-up, ocean-first island of our Lhaviyani range: strictly adults-only — the resort welcomes guests aged 15 and over — with 60 of its 90 villas standing over the water, so the island’s signature setting, its dining and its spa programme are built around the lagoon rather than the sand. The 5.8 Undersea Restaurant, the resident marine biologist and the near-daily manta season (October–April) give couples a genuine, specific reason to choose this island, and the two beach categories keep a foothold on the sand for those who want it. It sits in our Luxury band, and even the top All-Inclusive Plus package deliberately keeps the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant, destination dining, spa and watersports as paid signatures — the spend here goes into the ocean-facing experience itself. Families, and couples who want every last extra bundled into one flat package, will be happier on other portfolio islands — and we’ll say so and point you to them.

Experiences & wellness

Sulha Spa offers Asian massage techniques with chemical-free, organic products. A dedicated Underwater Wellness program includes undersea yoga and undersea sound healing sessions.

The villas, in full: five categories, all overwater or beachfront. Ocean Villa and Romantic Ocean Villa (105m² each, 30 units combined) put guests a step from the water on a private sundeck with direct ocean entry — no pool, built around the setting itself. Ocean Pool Villa (30 units, 132m², private infinity pool) is the top overwater category. Beach Sunset Pool Villa and Beach Pool Villa (132m² each, 30 units combined) sit on the beach with a private pool each, the Sunset villas on the island’s westernmost, sunset-facing side.

Dining, in full: the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant is the signature venue — one of only a handful of glass-walled undersea dining rooms anywhere, a multi-course tasting menu 5.8 metres below the surface. Kashibo Restaurant & Bar pairs authentic Asian street-food-inspired dishes with an overwater setting, teppanyaki and shochu cocktails. Canneli Restaurant covers the resort’s international menu. Champagne Pavilion sits on the westernmost point of the island for sundowners, with dolphins or manta rays regularly visible offshore. Coco Bar looks over the infinity pool and beach with a cocktail list, and J.F.K. — Junk Food Kitchen operates inside Coco Bar with an upscale-fast-food menu built to suit vegans and meat-eaters alike. In-Villa Dining and Thundi Bar round out the line-up.

Spa treatment room, Hurawalhi Island Resort
Spa treatment room, Hurawalhi Island Resort

Sulha Spa, in more detail: Asian massage techniques with chemical-free, organic products, framed as an oasis-style retreat rather than a menu of add-on treatments; the Underwater Wellness program (undersea yoga, undersea sound healing) is the property’s signature spa offering, run in a dedicated underwater space rather than a standard treatment room.

5.8 Undersea, in more detail: the tasting menu runs across multiple courses at a table 5.8 metres below the surface, glass on every side — reef fish, rays and the occasional passing shark move past the window over the course of the meal. It is a fine-dining reservation rather than a drop-in venue, and sits outside every meal-plan tier including the top-tier All-Inclusive Plus.

Kashibo, in more detail: the kitchen is built around authentic Asian street-food-inspired dishes served in an overwater dining room, with teppanyaki cooked to order and a shochu cocktail list alongside the wine cellar.

Coco Bar and Champagne Pavilion: both sit on the island’s westernmost point, the natural sunset-watching spot. Champagne Pavilion leans into that with a champagne-forward drinks list; Coco Bar looks over the infinity pool and beach with a wider cocktail menu and doubles as the daytime lounge. Dolphins and manta rays are both regularly sighted from this side of the island at sundown, though neither is guaranteed on any given evening.

Diving at Hurawalhi Island Resort house reef

Watersports and excursions: the resort runs a watersports programme for guests who want more than the house reef — motorised and non-motorised options are available through the watersports centre, and the dive team runs scheduled excursions in addition to the daily reef dives. Specific excursion names and pricing weren’t confirmed for this property; Mykish confirms the current excursion list directly with the resort before booking.

Marine Biology Center, in more detail: the programme is led by a resident marine biologist working in close cooperation with Prodivers Maldives, studying the reef environment the island sits within rather than running as a purely guest-facing add-on. Guests can join elements of the programme alongside the dive team’s scheduled reef dives; the near-daily manta sightings between October and April are tracked as part of the same research relationship.

Underwater Wellness, in more detail: Sulha Spa’s undersea yoga and undersea sound healing sessions run in a dedicated underwater space rather than a standard spa room — a genuinely unusual booking for a Maldives spa programme, and one of the more distinctive reasons clients choose this property over a more conventional overwater-spa resort.

House reef & marine life

  • House reef: Exceptional

October–April, almost-daily sightings at the resort's own sandbank — one of Lhaviyani Atoll's main feeding hotspots. Guided manta searches run with Hurawalhi's resident marine biologist through the Marine Biology Centre.

Sustainability

Ocean impact

Hurawalhi is a named collaborator of Parley for the Oceans’ Maldives program, and runs its own visible operation behind that: 4,102.5 m² of solar panels — roughly the size of 26 volleyball courts — across staff areas and dining jetties, and a desalination and glass-bottling plant that mineralises and chills the island’s own drinking water to cut plastic bottles out of the resort.

  • Waste heat from the generators is recovered to power the hot-water systems.
  • A hydroponic greenhouse and open growing areas supply produce to the restaurants.
  • The Marine Biology Center runs a resident marine biologist program over the house reef and the atoll’s manta sites.

Hurawalhi sits in Lhaviyani Atoll. Transfer options and timing are covered in the Australian traveller guide above.

Hurawalhi’s Marine Biology Center is run by a resident marine biologist in close cooperation with Prodivers Maldives, studying the reef environment the island sits on — the same team behind the near-daily manta sightings guests can join between October and April. The resort’s 2-storey fitness centre looks out over the atoll channel and the nearby Dhanifaru lagoon, close enough that dolphins or manta rays are sometimes visible mid-workout.

Lhaviyani Atoll sits north of Malé — reached only by seaplane at this property, no speedboat option exists on Hurawalhi’s own transfer page. The atoll’s reefs support a wide range of marine life year-round, and Hurawalhi’s own house reef is close enough to the villas that snorkelling doesn’t require a boat trip for guests staying in any of the five villa categories.

Mykish confirms current villa inventory, dining hours and the excursion list directly with Hurawalhi before any quote is issued — the property updates its offering between seasons, and this page reflects the most recent confirmed detail rather than a live feed.

Snorkellers and reef swimmers who never book a dive can still reach the house reef straight from the villa or the beach, without needing to join a boat excursion.

From Australia, Hurawalhi connects via the major Malé gateways, then a 40-minute seaplane transfer operating daylight hours only (06:00-15:00). The transfer is not included in the villa rate.

From Australia, Hurawalhi connects via one of the major Malé gateways — Singapore Airlines via Singapore (SIN), Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur (KUL), SriLankan Airlines via Colombo (CMB), or Emirates via Dubai (DXB) — then the 40-minute seaplane transfer, which flies daylight hours only (06:00–15:00) and is not included in the villa rate. Because the seaplane can’t fly after dark, an Australian flight landing into Malé in the evening can mean an unplanned overnight in Malé before reaching the island the next morning — worth building into the itinerary rather than discovering on arrival. All pricing on this page and in any quote is in AUD; any currency switcher elsewhere on the site is indicative only.

Consultant tip

Consultant tip: because the seaplane only flies in daylight, a late-arriving Australian flight into Malé can mean an unplanned overnight before reaching the island — worth planning connecting flights around this.

Because the seaplane only operates in daylight, Mykish recommends booking the earliest available Australian connecting flight into Malé where the itinerary allows it, to maximise the chance of same-day onward transfer rather than an overnight stopover.

Talk to Rahul about Hurawalhi Island Resort

As a direct-contract partner, Mykish books Hurawalhi at rates the public can’t access online, with on-ground support if anything needs sorting during the stay, and seasonal free upgrades when available — never guaranteed, always confirmed at the time of booking.

Meal plans run from Bed & Breakfast through Half Board and Full Board up to the resort’s own ‘All-Inclusive Plus’ tier — even at the top tier, the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant, destination dining, spa and watersports sit outside the inclusion and are booked and paid separately, which is worth flagging to clients expecting an all-covering all-inclusive.

Guests booking the top-tier All-Inclusive Plus should still budget separately for the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant reservation and any spa treatment beyond the complimentary programme, since neither is bundled into any board-basis tier at this property.

Every meal-plan quote from Mykish states the villa category, board basis and transfer clearly before booking, so there are no surprises on arrival.

Is Hurawalhi adults-only?

Yes — Hurawalhi welcomes guests aged 15 and over, resort-wide.

How do we get to Hurawalhi from Australia?

Fly into Malé, then a 40-minute seaplane transfer, which operates 06:00-15:00 daylight hours only.

What's special about the dining at Hurawalhi?

The 5.8 Undersea Restaurant is the signature venue, alongside Kashibo's dine-around Asian menu and its 355+ label wine cellar.

Is the house reef good for snorkelling and diving?

Yes — Hurawalhi's own site describes the house reef as 'teeming with life.' Prodivers runs a 5-star PADI training centre on-site.

Can we see mantas at Hurawalhi?

Yes — mantas are sighted October to April, almost daily at the resort's own sandbank.

What meal plans does Hurawalhi offer?

Bed & Breakfast, Half Board, Full Board, and an upgraded 'All-Inclusive Plus' tier.

Do Australians need a visa for the Maldives?

No advance visa is required. (Source: Maldives Immigration.)

Why book Hurawalhi through Mykish instead of directly?

We hold a direct contract, so we can get better rates than the public price, on-ground support during the stay, and seasonal upgrades when available.

What villa categories does Hurawalhi offer?

Five: Ocean Villa, Romantic Ocean Villa, Ocean Pool Villa, Beach Sunset Pool Villa and Beach Pool Villa — 90 villas in total, 60 of them overwater.

Does Hurawalhi have in-villa dining?

Yes — the full restaurant menu is available delivered to the villa, alongside the resort's eight other dining and bar venues.

What board basis options does Hurawalhi offer, and what do they cover?

Bed & Breakfast, Half Board, Full Board, and an upgraded All-Inclusive Plus tier covering alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, watersports access and daily activities — the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant, destination dining, spa treatments and dive-centre excursions sit outside every tier and are booked separately.

Is Hurawalhi reachable by speedboat?

No — the only transfer option is a 40-minute seaplane, operating daylight hours (06:00–15:00) only. There is no speedboat alternative to this island.

What makes the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant different from a normal overwater restaurant?

It sits 5.8 metres below the surface with glass on every side, rather than above the water looking down — one of only a handful of true glass-walled undersea dining rooms anywhere, built as a multi-course tasting-menu venue rather than a casual dining spot.
