Sustainability
Ocean impact
Dusit Thani Maldives sits inside Baa Atoll, the Maldives’ first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and runs a documented in-house sustainability programme. The island generates part of its power from a solar–diesel hybrid plant of 797 rooftop panels, recovers generator waste heat through a plate heat exchanger for hot water, and harvests rainwater (50,000-litre storage) for its laundry. Drinking water is purified and bottled in glass on the island — no plastic water bottles are used — and solid waste is compacted and thermally treated on-site rather than shipped loose. In the community, the resort has supported the Maldives’ first Manta Festival, donated snorkelling equipment and a hospitality training lab to Baa Atoll schools, and sponsors Operation Smile as its primary charity. Dusit Thani Maldives sits on Mudhdhoo Island, Baa Atoll, Republic of Maldives — the same UNESCO Biosphere Reserve atoll as our Dhigufaru property, a different island. On arrival, guests are met by resort representatives at Velana International Airport and, for the seaplane route, escorted to the resort’s own seaplane lounge for complimentary refreshments and light snacks before the flight; a welcome drink and fruit basket await on arrival at the island itself.
From Australia, Dusit Thani Maldives connects via one of the major Malé gateways — Singapore Airlines via Singapore (SIN), Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur (KUL), SriLankan Airlines via Colombo (CMB), or Emirates via Dubai (DXB).
Once in Malé, there are genuinely two ways to reach the resort: a ~35-minute daytime seaplane direct from Velana International (with its own seaplane lounge and welcome refreshments on arrival), or a ~25-minute domestic flight to Dharavandhoo Airport followed by a 10-minute speedboat transfer. Seaplanes only operate in daylight hours, so a late-arriving Australian flight into Malé can still force an overnight stay before reaching the island on that route — the domestic-flight-plus-speedboat option is worth knowing about as a fallback that isn’t bound by the same daylight-only window.

Waterfront Pool Villa (150m²) and Overwater Pool Villa (180m²) are genuinely overwater with a private pool — and, notably, both accept children. For groups and families needing more space: Two Bedrooms Overwater Pool Villa (262m², overwater), Two Bedrooms Beach Pool Villa (370m², beach) and Two Bedrooms Beach Pool Residence (560m², beach) all sleep up to 6, and the exclusive one-off Three Bedroom Beach Pool Residence (690m²) sleeps up to 9.
Do Australians need a visa for the Maldives?
