Why I recommend it

Why we recommend it

Vilu Reef is the pick for couples who want genuine overwater villas plus a proper kids’ club in the same contract — not every all-inclusive Maldives resort pulls that off. The whole resort runs on one 24-hour All-Inclusive Dine Around plan across four restaurants and two bars, so there’s no second-guessing what’s covered once you land. Its Dhaalu Atoll reef sits close enough to the beach for easy snorkelling, and the on-site dive centre runs a genuine full-day whale-shark excursion, not just a manta season. For honeymooners, Sun Siyam’s own complimentary dinner-and-turndown package stacks neatly on top of anything Mykish arranges directly.

The honest fit

Vilu Reef is a boutique, 103-villa island in lightly-visited Dhaalu Atoll with its famous fish-shaped overwater jetty, and it runs on one settled promise: a single 24-Hour All-Inclusive Dine Around plan, a genuine house reef a few metres off the beach, and a full family welcome — Turtle Kids’ Club, a 24-hour family pool bar and beach villas built for three. Couples still carve out their quiet: the 12-seat Wine Cellar, destination dinners set anywhere on the island, and the adult ends of the overwater jetty. Two honest calibrations we always make: Sun Siyam’s own contract flags the standard Water Villas as not recommended for young children because of the overwater layout — families going overwater should take the Two Bedroom Water Villa with Pool or stay beach-based — and the on-site SSI-certified dive centre covers beginner-through-advanced recreational diving, so specialist technical divers, strictly adults-only seekers or pay-as-you-dine travellers are better matched to other resorts in our portfolio. We’ll point you to exactly those if that’s your trip.

Getting there

Return transfers are included in every Mykish package. We confirm the transfer basis on your quote.

Sun Siyam Vilu Reef sits on its own island in South Nilandhe Atoll (Dhaalu Atoll), Republic of Maldives — a 35-minute seaplane flight from Velana International Airport. On arrival, guests get a meet-and-greet at the airport, use of the seaplane terminal’s VIP lounge, and a refreshing towel plus homemade welcome drink on reaching the island.

From Australia, Vilu Reef connects via one of the major Malé gateways — Singapore Airlines via Singapore (SIN), Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur (KUL), SriLankan Airlines via Colombo (CMB), or Emirates via Dubai (DXB).

Once in Malé, it’s a 35-minute daytime seaplane direct to the island. Unlike some Maldives resorts, a late-arriving Australian flight into Malé doesn’t force an overnight stay: night arrivals automatically switch to a domestic flight to Dhaalu Domestic Airport plus a 60-minute speedboat transfer, so you can still reach the island the same night.

All pricing on this page and in any quote is in AUD; any currency switcher elsewhere on the site is indicative only.

Consultant tip

Consultant tip: the baggage allowance is 20kg checked + 1 piece of hand luggage not over 5kg per passenger, for both the seaplane and the domestic transfer — excess is charged directly by the transfer operator, not by Mykish. If you’re booking a water-based villa (Reef Villa, Sunset Reef Villa, Water Villa with Pool, Grand Water Villa with Pool, or the Two Bedroom Water Villa with Pool) for a family with young children, flag it with us first — Sun Siyam’s own contract notes these aren’t laid out with young kids in mind and any booking needs the parents’ explicit consent.

Talk to Rahul about Sun Siyam Vilu Reef

As a direct-contract Sun Siyam partner, Mykish can secure Vilu Reef inside the group’s shared room-night quota at rates and availability the public booking channel doesn’t see, with on-ground support if anything needs sorting mid-stay. Sun Siyam’s own honeymoon package (complimentary honeymoon dinner, one in-villa breakfast, turndown bed decoration and a celebratory cake, minimum 3-night stay, marriage certificate dated within 12 months) and birthday/anniversary perks (cake and a bottle of wine) stack on top of whatever Mykish arranges directly — ask your consultant to confirm current eligibility.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do we get to Sun Siyam Vilu Reef from Australia?

Fly into Malé via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Colombo or Dubai, then a 35-minute daytime seaplane direct to the island.

Is Vilu Reef good for families with kids, or is it really a couples resort?

Both. Vilu Reef runs a full Turtle Kids Club (ages 3-11.99) and family-capable villas across most categories, but its own marketing leans into 'ideal for couples, carefree relaxation' — so it suits families who want a calmer island rather than a big kids'-activity resort, and it works just as well for honeymooners. It is not adults-only.

Can we book an overwater villa if we're travelling with young children?

You can, but Sun Siyam's own contract flags its overwater villas — Reef Villa, Sunset Reef Villa, Water Villa with Pool, Grand Water Villa with Pool, and the Two Bedroom Water Villa with Pool — as 'not recommended for young children' due to the layout, and bookings need the parents' full consent. If you want a worry-free overwater stay with kids, ask us about the Two Bedroom Water Villa with Pool, or book a beach-based family villa instead.

What does the All-Inclusive plan actually cover?

There's one meal plan sold at Vilu Reef: the 24-Hour All-Inclusive Dine Around. It covers breakfast, lunch and dinner (buffet at The Aqua, or a three-course set menu at Well Done and The Spice with advance reservation), daily afternoon tea, unlimited house-brand drinks around the clock, a replenished in-villa minibar, free snorkel gear, one hour per person per day of non-motorised watersports, and one complimentary excursion (Local Island Experience or Sunset Dolphin Cruise) per stay. It doesn't cover motorised watersports, spa treatments, or the a la carte Destination Dining experience.

What's the difference between the villa categories?

Eight categories in three groups. On the beach: Beach Villa and Deluxe Beach Villa (both 76m², no pool — Deluxe adds a beachfront swinging sofa and a different location cluster), Jacuzzi Deluxe Beach Villa (76m², same footprint plus an in-room bathroom jacuzzi), and Beach Villa with Pool (78m², private pool). Overwater: Reef Villa and Sunset Reef Villa (78m², genuinely overwater despite the name, no pool — same villa, your choice of standard or sunset-facing), and Water Villa with Pool (90m², private pool). At the top: Grand Water Villa with Pool (110m², bigger pool, overwater) and the Two Bedroom Water Villa with Pool (220m², the only multi-bedroom villa, sleeps up to 6).

Can we snorkel straight off the beach?

Yes — the house reef sits just a few metres from the beach, and snorkel gear is provided free for every stay.

Does Vilu Reef offer whale shark and manta encounters?

Yes to both, genuinely. Mantas are sighted at Vilu Reef's own cleaning-station dive point from December to May, at close range. The on-site dive centre also runs a full-day excursion to a dedicated whale-shark point — a real, bookable trip, not a token mention.

What happens if our flight lands in Malé at night — do we have to stay over?

No — this is one of Vilu Reef's genuine advantages. Because the seaplane only flies in daylight, night arrivals automatically switch to a domestic flight to Dhaalu Domestic Airport plus a 60-minute speedboat transfer, so you can still reach the island the same night rather than being stuck overnight in Malé.

Do Australians need a visa for the Maldives?

No advance visa is required. The Maldives grants a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival to all nationalities, including Australians, provided you hold a passport valid for 6+ months beyond your stay, proof of onward or return travel, confirmed accommodation, and sufficient funds for your visit. (Source: Maldives Immigration.)

Why book Sun Siyam Vilu Reef through Mykish instead of directly?

We hold a direct Sun Siyam contract inside the group's shared room-night quota, which means access and on-ground support the public booking channel doesn't offer, plus we handle the whole itinerary — flights, transfers and timing — around the resort's seaplane-only daylight schedule.
