It’s deliberately accessible Lapland: the wildlife park welcomes day visitors, the igloos are priced for families rather than scarcity, and Rovaniemi’s airport, trains and daily buses put it within easy reach. Travellers hunting an ultra-exclusive, adults-leaning pioneer igloo resort are shopping for a different product — our portfolio carries that too, and we’ll route you honestly. Aurora season runs September to April, the igloos’ glass roofs are built for it, and in summer the same lakeshore turns to hiking, berry-picking and rowing — a genuine year-round island of the north.

Twin Igloo — 10 of the 20 Glass Igloos, upper row (set back from the lake). Two single beds, 36m², private sauna/shower/toilet, kitchenette (kettle, French press, microwave, fridge). Max 1-2 persons. Holiday Villa — 30 villas across 15 semi-detached houses, at the main resort next to the Wildlife Park (Rovaniementie 29). 65m² over two floors: downstairs bedroom + sauna/shower/toilet, upstairs bedroom + 2 open-loft beds + shower/toilet, full kitchen, seating area with fireplace, private terrace. Sleeps 1-6. Two villas can be joined via an interconnecting door for up to 12 — genuinely useful for multi-gen groups. Apartments are named/themed after Arctic animals. Pets welcome in some apartments (pet fee, limited availability). Bed linen, towels and final cleaning are included in the rate; breakfast is included on the with-breakfast rate only — the resort sells the same villa without it.

Time at the property
Sauna: every Glass Igloo and every Holiday Villa has its own private sauna — a genuine, portfolio-wide feature, not an add-on.
Ranua Wildlife Park (on-site, genuine differentiator): roughly 50 species and 150 animals, established 1983, drawing about 150,000 visitors a year, open every day of the year. Species on site include the Eurasian lynx, a captive polar bear (Venus), snowy owl, grey wolves, red fox, dhole, moose, otter, beaver, wild boar, reindeer and white-tailed deer, viewed via an accessible boardwalk trail through the forest. The park is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) and carries EcoCompass and Sustainable Travel Finland sustainability certifications; admission ticket purchases are explicitly framed by the resort as supporting species conservation and biodiversity, and are largely non-refundable per its own booking terms. This is a rare, genuine family-with-kids drawcard for an aurora-season destination — most Arctic aurora properties have nothing comparable on-site.

The resort’s heart: an arctic wildlife park open year-round since 1983, home to around 150 animals across ~50 northern species — brown bears, wolves, lynx, wolverines and eagle owls — and a member of EAZA, the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria.
Northern-lights hunts, husky and reindeer safaris, snowmobiling, Finn-horse experiences, ice fishing and snowshoe treks — winter runs from November to mid-April.
The northern lights show from September through April, and the glass-roofed igloos on the lakeshore are built precisely for watching them from bed.
From June to August: hiking and biking trails, berry and mushroom picking, husky-cart rides, Finn-horse carriage drives, fat bikes, SUP boards and rowing on the lake.
Sustainability
Ranua Resort publishes its credentials in its own 2025 resort guide: the property holds the EcoCompass environmental certificate and the Sustainable Travel Finland label, and carries the We Speak Gay inclusivity mark. Its Wildlife Park — a member of EAZA, the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria — is specialised in arctic species and their conservation, which is the reason the resort exists at all.

The operating entity is Ranuan Seudun Matkailu Oy (Ranua Region Tourism Ltd). Ranua Resort is part of “Ranua Finland”, a joint regional marketing organisation. Nearest airport and transfer detail are covered in the Australian traveller guide above; the resort’s own two-way transfer service and Rovaniemi’s daily train/bus links are both real, sourced options.
From Australia, Ranua connects via Helsinki (HEL) — the natural Nordic gateway — reached through a major hub carrier, then a short domestic flight or the daily train/bus link on to Rovaniemi, Ranua’s nearest airport.
Once at Rovaniemi, Ranua Resort’s own two-way transfer service covers the final leg (minimum 2 persons) — daily train and bus connections between Helsinki, Rovaniemi and Ranua also exist as an alternative.

Consultant tip: don’t let ‘polar night’ put anyone off a December/January booking. Ranua’s own seasonal chart shows genuine daylight even at the darkest point of the year (about 2.5 hours in December and January) — and that’s exactly the window that delivers the most dark-sky hours for aurora viewing, framed here as the trade-off that makes the season work, not a downside. The stated aurora season runs September through April, with the wider winter season November to mid-April.

The Glass Igloo (20 total, in two rows on the shore of Lake Ranuanjärvi, ~6km from the main resort) is the aurora-viewing product — glass-walled bedroom, private sauna/kitchenette, 36m², built for couples (Twin) or a couple plus up to two children under 14 (Lakeside). The Holiday Villa (30 total across 15 semi-detached houses, at the main resort next to the Wildlife Park) is the family/group product — 65m² over two floors, private sauna, fireplace, full kitchen, sleeps up to 6 (12 if two villas are joined).
It's a separate admission product — Ranua Resort's own booking terms note that ticket purchases primarily support species conservation and biodiversity, and are largely non-refundable — not bundled automatically into an accommodation booking. Ask your consultant whether your package includes a Wildlife Park ticket.
No advance visa is required for most stays. Finland is a full Schengen Area member, and Australian passport holders get visa-free entry for tourism/short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen zone. You'll need a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from Schengen, and — as with any Schengen entry — border officials can ask for proof of onward travel, accommodation and sufficient funds.
