Why I recommend it

Why we recommend it

Northern Lights Village Saariselkä is the pick for couples who want to watch the aurora without leaving bed — literally: every Aurora Cabin, Polar Sky Suite and Panorama Suite has a laser-heated glass roof built directly over the bed, not just a window nearby. It’s a boutique, couples-focused product rather than a huge activity village, which suits travellers wanting an intimate Lapland base. As a direct-contract partner, Mykish books it at rates you won’t find booking direct.

The honest fit

Northern Lights Village Saariselkä is built for two people and one sky: every category we can confirm — Aurora Cabin, Polar Sky Suite and Panorama Suite — puts a single double bed directly beneath a laser-heated glass roof that opens into the northern night, so you watch for the aurora without leaving the duvet. It’s a boutique, couples-first base rather than a big activity village, on a direct Mykish contract. Take its design honestly: the glass roof is a partial pane over the bed, not a floor-to-ceiling dome — full-dome chasers should ask us about Kakslauttanen’s Glass Igloos — and the saunas here (the Igloo Sauna & Hot Tub, and the Sauna, Hot Tub & Ice Pool) are genuine bookable facilities you reserve like an activity, not an in-room feature, which is the opposite pattern from Kakslauttanen’s every-unit private saunas. It isn’t adults-only — childcare and kids’ snowmobile rentals are on the official list — but the one-double-bed layout means larger families and groups should plan on multiple cabins, and we’ll set that up honestly or point you to a property with big family rooms if that fits better.

Aurora Photography Workshop

A one-hour workshop on shooting the aurora — the first evening of most packages at Saariselkä, Levi and Pyhä.

Reindeer Safari

The Reindeer Express runs 25 minutes at all three cabin villages; Pyhä and Saariselkä also sell a longer 1.5–2.5 hour reindeer safari. Autumn swaps the sleigh for a reindeer paddock or farm visit.

Cross-Country Skiing Lesson

A two-hour lesson, carried in the longer packages at Saariselkä, Levi and Pyhä.

Snowmobile & Ice Fishing

Four hours combining a snowmobile safari with ice fishing. Ivalo runs the electric-snowmobile version of the same trip.

Searching for Santa

A 2.5–3 hour visit, carried in the family and Best-of-Lapland packages at Saariselkä, Levi and Pyhä.

Siida Museum Excursion

The Sámi museum and Nature Centre at Inari — offered from Saariselkä and Ivalo, the two villages close enough to reach it.

Tankavaara Gold Panning

A four-hour autumn excursion to the gold-panning village, offered from Saariselkä.

Aurora Hunting by Electric Fat Bike

The autumn substitute for the snowmobile hunt, 2.5–3 hours, at Saariselkä, Levi and Pyhä before the snow arrives.

National Park Hike

Three to four hours on foot, autumn only, at Saariselkä, Levi and Pyhä.

Survival Camp

A three-hour autumn wilderness-skills session, carried in the family packages.

Overnight in a Glass-Roof Aurora Kota

Ivalo only: a night in the glass-roofed kota, carried inside both of that village's multi-night packages rather than sold as a stand-alone.

Visit to Sámiland

Levi only: a 1.5–2 hour visit to the Sámi cultural centre on Levi fell.

Water Park

Levi only: a water-park visit carried in the family package — the one indoor, weather-proof thing on the whole list.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing lessons on Saariselkä’s fells.

  • RegionSaariselkä

Return transfers are included in every Mykish package. We confirm the transfer basis on your quote.

Northern Lights Village Saariselkä sits at Rovaniementie 3222E, 99830 Saariselkä, in Finnish Lapland. Its Polar Sky Suite units sit in a second cluster roughly 3km away on the Kaunispää fell, separate from the main Aurora Cabin/Panorama Suite site — worth flagging to guests booking that category so they know to expect a short transfer within the property itself. Airport transfer timing and logistics are covered in the Australian traveller guide above.

From Australia, Northern Lights Village connects via Helsinki — most itineraries route through a Southeast Asian or Middle Eastern hub (Singapore, Bangkok, Doha, Dubai) onto a service into Helsinki, then a short domestic connection to Ivalo Airport.

From Ivalo Airport, Northern Lights Village is roughly 20–28km / ~21–25 minutes away. Northern Lights Village does offer its own airport-pickup booking service, which we can arrange as part of your package.

Consultant tip

Consultant tip: Northern Lights Village’s saunas are genuine, bookable facilities — Igloo Sauna & Hot Tub, and Sauna, Hot Tub & Ice Pool — not an in-cabin feature of any of the three accommodation categories. Book a sauna session as a separate add-on, the same way you’d book an activity; don’t assume it’s included in the room.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do we get to Northern Lights Village from Australia?

Fly into Helsinki — most Australian itineraries route via a Southeast Asian or Middle Eastern hub (Singapore, Bangkok, Doha, Dubai) — then a short domestic connection to Ivalo Airport. From Ivalo, Northern Lights Village is roughly 20–28km / ~21–25 minutes away; the resort offers its own airport-pickup booking service, which we can arrange for you.

Is the sauna in our cabin, or do we book it separately?

Separately. Unlike some other Lapland properties in our portfolio, Northern Lights Village's saunas — Igloo Sauna & Hot Tub, and Sauna, Hot Tub & Ice Pool — are genuine bookable facilities, not an en-suite feature of the Aurora Cabin, Polar Sky Suite or Panorama Suite. Book it the same way you'd book an activity, not assume it's included in your room.

What's the difference between the Aurora Cabin, Polar Sky Suite and Panorama Suite?

All three share the same core feature: a laser-heated glass roof built directly over the bed for aurora and night-sky viewing. Polar Sky Suite is NLV's higher tier, sited in a separate cluster roughly 3km away on Kaunispää fell; Panorama Suite and Aurora Cabin share the main site. The difference is tier and location, not the core glass-roof design.

Can our whole family or group stay in one cabin?

Every category we could confirm is built around a single double bed under the glass roof (base configuration, sleeps 2) — this reads as a couples-focused product. Larger families or groups should talk to us about booking multiple cabins rather than expecting one large room.

When's the best time to see the aurora at Northern Lights Village?

Northern Lights Village doesn't publish its own aurora viewing season, so we don't quote a specific window for this property. The resort runs a dedicated aurora-hunting program — by snowmobile, heated sleigh, snowshoes or on foot — led by guides the property describes as experienced aurora photographers. Ask your consultant for current seasonal advice before booking.

What other winter activities can we book?

Husky safaris (5km and 10km options), reindeer sleigh rides and paddock visits, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing lessons, ice fishing, and a dedicated 'Searching for Santa' experience (2.5–3 hours), alongside the aurora-hunting program. Photography workshops and childcare services are also available on request.

Is Northern Lights Village adults-only?

No — childcare services and kids' snowmobile rentals are listed on the official site, so it isn't run as an adults-only property. That said, every accommodation category we could confirm is a couples-focused, single-double-bed layout — see the group/family question above.

Do Australians need a visa for Finland?

No advance visa is required for most stays. Finland is a full Schengen Area member, and Australian passport holders get visa-free entry for tourism/short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen zone. You'll need a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from Schengen, and — as with any Schengen entry — border officials can ask for proof of onward travel, accommodation and sufficient funds.
