SOUTH ARI ATOLL · MALDIVES
LUX* South Ari Atoll is one of the very few Maldives properties where whale-shark encounters aren’t a lucky, seasonal maybe — South Ari Atoll’s…
Why I recommend it
LUX* South Ari Atoll is one of the very few Maldives properties where whale-shark encounters aren’t a lucky, seasonal maybe — South Ari Atoll’s waters host them close to year-round, and the resort runs its own marine-biologist-led excursions to find them. It’s also a genuinely rare fit for mixed groups travelling together: honeymooners get the couples-only Romantic Pool Water Villa (the resort’s largest single category, sunrise-facing with a private pool), while families in the same party can book a beach pavilion or one of several family-capable villa categories and still share the same PLAY kids’ club, spa and eight-restaurant dine-around. We book it through our LUX* agent-portal relationship rather than a direct contract, so the appeal here has to be the resort itself, not a negotiated-rate story — and on facilities and scale (193 villas, its own PADI dive centre, 40 complimentary experiences) it earns that on its own terms.
Best for
The honest fit
LUX* South Ari Atoll is the big, social expression of luxury in our portfolio — one of the larger resort islands in the Maldives, and genuinely family-friendly from end to end: PLAY runs a full kids’ and teens’ programme, family villa categories go up to two-bedroom layouts, and the published list of forty complimentary experiences — open-air cinema, coral planting with the marine biologist, coffee-roasting workshops — is built to fill a week without opening a wallet. Couples still carve out their own island here, on the overwater arms and at Beach Rouge after dark; but a couple who wants an island with no children on it at all is better matched to one of our adults-only properties, and we’ll say so when you enquire. Dining is broad, with the all-inclusive sold as a dine-around supplement spanning MIXE, East Market, Senses, Beach Rouge and the bars; the two signature restaurants, Allegria and Umami, sit outside it with a dining credit instead — worth knowing when you plan your evenings. Snorkelling here runs on the island’s schedule: complimentary house-reef trips are guided and tide-dependent rather than a walk-in-anytime habit, and if mark-your-own-map beach snorkelling is your daily ritual, other Ari and Baa Atoll islands in our portfolio are built for exactly that. One more honest note: we book LUX* through its agent programme rather than under a Mykish direct contract, so our direct-contract value story — negotiated rates, seasonal-upgrade conversations — doesn’t apply here; what you get instead is one of the Maldives’ most polished big-island resorts, quoted straight. The seaplane from Malé takes about 25 minutes, flown in daylight — we time your connections around it.
Where you stay

24 units, 60m². Interconnected pavilion on the beach with individual outdoor terrace. No private pool. Room sharing: 2 adults + 1 infant (baby cot), or 1 child, or 1 teen (max 3).

6 units, 120m². Two-bedroom pavilion on the beach, two entrances, separate terrace. No private pool. Room sharing: 4 adults + 2 infants/children/teens, OR 2 adults + 4 children/teens (max 6).

6 units, 130m². Despite the "Lagoon" name, the supplier's own description places this on the beach ("two-bedroom pavilion on the beach with a common entrance"), not overwater — supplier label preserved verbatim per the mapping rule, name-vs-structure trap flagged so no future author re-opens it. Same room-sharing policy as the Two-Bedroom Family Beach Pavilion (max 6).

35 units, 95m². Sea view, direct access to beach and lagoon. No private pool. Room sharing: 3 adults, OR 2 adults + 1 infant/2 children/2 teens (max 4).

10 units, 113m². Private infinity pool, direct beach/lagoon access, secluded garden. Room sharing: 3 adults, OR 2 adults + 2 teens/2 children/1 infant (max 4).

12 units, 116m², sunset side of the island. Private plunge pool and garden, direct beach access — a distinct supplier product from Romantic Beach Pool Villa despite mapping to the same structural enum. Room sharing: 2 adults + 1 infant/1 child/1 teen (max 3).

38 units, 98m². Over-water, direct lagoon access, no private pool. Genuinely family-capable (unlike this resort's pool water-villa categories, below): room sharing 3 adults, OR 2 adults + 1 infant/2 children/2 teens (max 4).

46 units, 110m² — the resort's single largest villa category (roughly a quarter of all villas). Over-water, private pool, sunrise-facing, direct lagoon access. COUPLES ONLY: room sharing is 2 adults, no children, no infants, no exceptions.

3 units (rarest standard category), 220m². 14-metre private pool, separate living room with a glass floor, jacuzzi, sunrise views, direct lagoon access. Unlike the much larger Romantic Pool Water Villa category, this one genuinely accepts a child: 2 adults + 1 infant/1 child/1 teen (max 3).

1 unit (the resort's single flagship villa), 360m². Positioned at the jetty's end with a panoramic sunset view; glass-floored living and dining room, extensive outdoor terrace and lounge area, infinity pool. Exclusive access to Allegria restaurant. Room sharing: 2 adults + 1 infant/1 child/1 teen (max 3).

The villas, in full: ten categories. Over water, Water Villa (38 units, 98m², direct lagoon access, no private pool) sits below the resort’s largest single category, the Romantic Pool Water Villa (46 units, 110m², sunrise-facing, couples-only), the rare Temptation Pool Water Villa (3 units, 220m², a 14-metre private pool) and the resort’s single flagship, the LUX* Villa (1 unit, 360m² overwater suite).

On the bar side: East Bar, Senses Lounge and Bar, Veli Pool Bar and Lagoon Bar, plus In-Villa Dining for anyone who wants the full menu delivered to the villa.

The resident marine biologist hosts a weekly Marine Talk and a coral-planting session guests can join — part of the resort’s published complimentary-experiences programme (2025 edition).
Year-round, per the resort's own materials — South Ari Atoll is one of the very few places in the Maldives where whale sharks are present close to year-round rather than on a seasonal migration (the resort's own marketing describes this as "the world's only year-round whale-shark aggregation site…
Snorkelling equipment, kayaks, pedal boats and stand-up paddleboards are complimentary, with scheduled house-reef snorkelling trips built into the all-inclusive package.

Open-air movies on the beach twice a week, themed DJ nights at Beach Rouge, morning coffee at Café LUX*, ice cream from the ICI tricycle, and 25 message-in-a-bottle surprises hidden around the island — per the resort’s 2025 complimentary-experiences programme.
The kids’ and teens’ programme runs daily activities, kids’ yoga, creative workshops at the Junk Art Studio & Gallery, and full child amenities in the villa down to baby bathtubs and bottle warmers.

Pools, sauna and steam room in the relaxation area, weekly product-discovery and DIY facial workshops, and daily yoga and fitness sessions.
In the water
Year-round, per the resort's own materials — South Ari Atoll is one of the very few places in the Maldives where whale sharks are present close to year-round rather than on a seasonal migration (the resort's own marketing describes this as "the world's only year-round whale-shark aggregation site" — a superlative sourced ONLY to the resort's own site/marketing, not independently verified, and not to be published as Mykish's own claim without a hedge). LUX* runs a paid 'Discover the whale shark' experience and 'whale shark safaris' with marine-biologist-led trips. Genuinely well-corroborated across two independent Mykish-sourced documents (factsheet + official website).
Sustainability
The resort keeps a marine biologist in residence, and puts guests to work with them: a weekly coral-planting session and a Marine Talk are part of LUX* South Ari Atoll’s published complimentary-experiences programme (2025 edition) — conservation offered as an experience rather than a brochure line.
Planning your trip
Return transfers are included in every Mykish package. We confirm the transfer basis on your quote.
LUX* South Ari Atoll sits in South Ari Atoll, Republic of Maldives, on a long, narrow island with overwater villa jetties extending from both ends. Transfer is by ~25-minute seaplane from Velana International Airport, with a Meet & Greet service on arrival at Malé and a private LUX* Lounge at the seaplane terminal for guests waiting on their onward flight.
The island sits in South Ari Atoll, one of the Maldives’ better-known whale-shark corridors — the resort’s own marine-biologist-led excursions and Marine Biology Centre run coral-planting and coral-adoption programmes alongside the swim experiences. Board basis runs from B&B up to Half and Full Board depending on the villa category booked; Mykish confirms current villa inventory and dining hours directly with LUX* before any quote is issued.
From Australia, LUX* South Ari Atoll connects via one of the major Malé gateways — Singapore Airlines via Singapore (SIN), Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur (KUL), SriLankan Airlines via Colombo (CMB), or Emirates via Dubai (DXB).
Once in Malé, the resort is reached by a ~25-minute daytime seaplane direct from Velana International Airport, with a private LUX* Lounge at the seaplane terminal and a Meet & Greet service on arrival at Malé airport. Unlike some of our directly contracted Maldives properties, this seaplane transfer is charged separately by the resort rather than bundled into a Mykish package — your consultant will confirm the current cost and arrangement at the time of quote. Seaplanes only operate in daylight, so a late-arriving Australian flight into Malé can still force an overnight stay before reaching the island — worth planning your connecting flights around.
All pricing on this page and in any quote is in AUD; any currency switcher elsewhere on the site is indicative only.
Consultant tip
Consultant tip: because the seaplane transfer here is charged separately by the resort rather than bundled the way it is on some of our other Maldives properties, confirm the current transfer cost and any luggage-weight limits with your consultant at the time of quote rather than assuming it matches other resorts you may have researched — operators and allowances vary by property.
Your consultant
We book LUX* South Ari Atoll through our agency relationship with the LUX* Resorts agent portal — not a direct contract — so we can’t promise negotiated rates or guaranteed seasonal upgrades the way we can on our directly contracted Maldives properties. What you do get: a Mykish consultant handling your enquiry and booking end-to-end, and on-ground support if anything needs sorting during your stay. If a direct-contract alternative in a similar tier matters more to you than this specific resort, ask us — several of our other Maldives properties are direct contracts.
Because Mykish books LUX* South Ari Atoll through the brand’s agent-portal relationship rather than a direct contract, the client benefit here is on-ground support and booking accuracy rather than a negotiated-rate story — seasonal upgrades, when available through the portal, are never guaranteed and always confirmed at the time of booking, the same as every Mykish property.

Yes. PLAY kids' club runs for ages 3-11 with its own indoor space and a dedicated pool, plus a separate teens' programme; babysitting is available from age 1 at a supplement. Most villa categories accept children — the exception is the resort's largest single category, see the next question.
In some categories, yes — more flexible here than several other resorts in our portfolio. Water Villa and Temptation Pool Water Villa both accept a child alongside 2 adults. Romantic Pool Water Villa — this resort's single largest category at 46 units — is couples-only, no exceptions.
No. It runs a full kids' and teens' programme alongside honeymoon and couples-only inventory.
Genuinely, yes — one of this property's real differentiators. South Ari Atoll is one of the few places in the Maldives where whale sharks are present close to year-round, and the resort runs its own paid, marine-biologist-led excursions.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner across East Market, Mixe, Beach Rouge and Senses Restaurant, Café LUX* coffee and ICI ice cream included, a wide drinks selection, and a daily-refreshed mini-bar. Umami and Allegria are a 40% discount, not full inclusion, and Allegria is LUX* Villa guests only. In-villa dining is never included.
Complimentary snorkel gear and scheduled house-reef trips are included, but access is tide- and weather-dependent rather than a guaranteed walk-in-anytime beach entry.
No advance visa is required. The Maldives grants a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival to all nationalities, including Australians, provided you hold a passport valid for 6+ months beyond your stay, proof of onward or return travel, confirmed accommodation, and sufficient funds for your visit. Thirteen — six restaurants (East Market, Mixe, Beach Rouge, Senses Restaurant, Umami, Allegria), two all-day/café venues (ICI, Café LUX*), four bars (East Bar, Senses Lounge and Bar, Veli Pool Bar, Lagoon Bar) and In-Villa Dining.
